Infant Stools

Infant stools can vary greatly in color and frequency.

It is important to know what is normal and what needs to be evaluated by your physician. Normal infant stools can be yellow, green, or brown. When baby food is introduced into the diet around 6 months of age, you may notice new colors and consistencies that are a direct result of what they are eating. Red, black, or white stools are not normal and need to evaluated by your doctor.

Frequency of stools can range from multiple times a day to every several days and still be considered normal. As long as the stool is soft, there is no need to worry. Breastfed babies can have loose, seedy stools which are also normal.
