Measles
On May 27, 2025, Nebraska had it’s first Measles case confirmed in Sheridan County.
We want to keep our community informed and protected. A case of measles has been confirmed in Sheridan County, and while it’s currently isolated, measles spreads extremely easily. This is a timely reminder to make sure your child is protected with the MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) vaccine.
What parents need to know:
Measles is highly contagious and can lead to serious complications, especially in young children.
The MMR vaccine is safe, effective, and the best way to protect your child and those around them.
The CDC recommends children receive:
The first dose at 12–15 months of age
The second dose at 4–6 years of age
Infants 6-11 months may be eligible to receive early vaccination, under specific circumstances. If you have questions about whether or not your child is eligible, please do not hesitate to call our office for further information.
Note: Babies born to mother’s who are immune to measles will receive the mother’s antibodies during the pregnancy. This immunity will gradually decrease over the baby’s first year of life. Due to the presence of maternal antibodies, immunizing a baby under the age of 12 months is less effective, thus requiring the two dose of MMR after their first birthday for the vaccine to be most effective.
Even a single case can quickly lead to an outbreak if vaccination rates are low. Protect your child, your family, and your community by staying up to date.
